The Anti-Recession Pill
Ingenuity. That’s right, it’s that simple. As the Slovenians like to say, even something bad is still good for something.
In a recent article entitled ”In Hard Times, Freelancers Turn to the Web”, a few interesting sites are mentioned, however one in particular takes the cake… If you haven’t yet, take a look at Elance. It just might make you a bit more optimistic about this crappy economy. It certainly had that effect on me. Since 2005, when the site was launched, the site claims its freelancers have made a whooping $153 million combined, working on various projects, from areas such as engineering and IT to legal and of course, my personal favorite, marketing.
Looking at the Top 100 skills in demand on Elance, coming in first is graphic design, followed by blogs @ #13, marketing strategy @ #18, market research @ #29, advertising @ #38 and finally, branding @ # 50. Since the company I’m starting with a friend will need to hit the ground running, I’m thinking this site could be a nice way to make some cash from the get go… We have even found a pitch for a company rebranding, which is something we have discussed specializing in. A revamped logo, tagline and homepage is all they’re asking for. The pay, $1 -5K (depending on the proposal you submit). Not bad for what would ostensibly be only a few days worth of work. And mostly creative at that.
Right now I’m thinking the recession will make becoming a freelancer only that much more attractive. Companies are looking to save money by outsourcing and reducing payroll, and freelancers like me will be there to fill in the void. Brilliant.
