While Real Madrid has a strong squad, one position that has always been a source of contention is the left-back position. Ferland Mendy has been with the club for 4 years and has established himself as a regular starter.
The French star has the trust of manager Carlo Ancelotti, but some club officials do not seem to think of him as highly as the manager. Indeed, recent reports indicated that Los Blancos were unsure on whether to renew Mendy’s contract or sell him in the summer.
Several left-backs have been linked to a transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu amid the speculation surrounding Mendy’s situation. Former defenders such as Fran Garcia and Miguel Gutierrez are on Real Madrid’s radar, as is Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.
Real Madrid have identified RB Leipzig and Germany left-back David Raum as a potential transfer target, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The 24-year-old left-back built his reputation at TSG Hoffenheim, which he joined in 2021 from Greuther Furth. One year later, he was signed by RB Leipzig in a €26 million deal this summer.
Raum has appeared in 22 games for the Bundesliga club and has one assist. Under Hansi Flick, the left-back has also been the first choice for the German national team, earning 14 caps so far, two of which have come in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022.
Real Madrid appears to be taking notice of Raum’s progress. His contract with Leipzig expires in the summer of 2027, and according to the report, Los Blancos would have to pay €40 million to sign the German international.
What could work in the Merengues’ favour is that Raum recently stated that joining the club would be a dream come true if they ever came calling.
“Perhaps it would be a dream. I’m not going to shut any doors. “I’m very happy in Leipzig, but Madrid is a crazy club,” he had previously stated.
