Benzema will receive medal if France wins the World Cup

FIFA World Cup: Benzema eligible to receive medal if France wins

According to RMC Sport, Karim Benzema will be eligible for a winner’s medal if France wins the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar (via Madrid Xtra).

Benzema has been ruled out of the quadrennial event due to a thigh injury sustained in training ahead of France’s opener against Australia. However, if France wins the World Cup in 2022, the winner of the Ballon d’Or will receive a winner’s medal, according to the above- mentioned source. This is due to the fact that the holders have not replaced the injured forward in their team.

As of now, Benzema remains a member of France’s 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. As a result, despite not playing a single minute in the tournament, the attacker will be awarded a medal. It is worth noting, however, that no country has successfully defended the World Cup since Brazil in 1962 and Italy (1938) are the only countries to have won two World Cups in a row.

France has so much attacking strength that they can afford not to name a replacement for Benzema. Their attacking abilities were on display in their 4-1 victory over Australia on Tuesday (November 22).

Olivier Giroud scored twice to tie Thierry Henry for the most goals in France with 51. Other goal scorers included Kylian Mbappe and Adrien Rabiot.

France then defeated Denmark 2-1 on Saturday and became the first team to reach the knockout stages in Qatar.

Karim Benzema has only appeared in one FIFA World Cup for France.

Karim Benzema, despite being among the best French forwards of his generation, has only appeared in one FIFA World Cup for his country.

The Real Madrid forward was a member of the squad that competed in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He was not selected for the 2018 edition in Russia, so he missed out on the opportunity to lift international football’s most prestigious trophy with his country.

Benzema had a solid World Cup performance, scoring three goals before France was eliminated in the quarterfinals by champions Germany.
