The president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, has suggested once again that Kylian Mbappe should have signed with Real Madrid this summer instead of re-signing with Paris Saint-Germain.
Los Blancos have been interested in Mbappe for a long time. Last summer, when he was in the last year of his contract at PSG, they made a nine-figure offer to buy him. The offer was turned down, but it was thought that the forward would join Real for free the following summer.
While everyone expected Mbappe to sign with Real Madrid, he instead signed a new three-year contract at Parc des Princes at the end of May.
Tebas has long been a critic of this move, insisting that PSG must be spending beyond their means to have locked down the 23-year-old to a new deal on such exorbitant terms.
Tebas used his time at a La Liga press conference to continue criticising Mbappe for choosing to remain with PSG rather than join Real.
When we examine the clubs they play for, we find that they are the ones most willing to spend money. When asked about the current absence of star names in La Liga, Tebas said, “Of course, we would have liked them to come, but they weren’t there last year either.”
“Mbappe stayed in a non-competitive championship.”
PSG and Mbappe have gotten off to a strong start this season under Christophe Galtier’s leadership, with wins over Lille (7-1) and Juventus (2-1) in the Champions League.
Nonetheless, Mbappe has been called out for his alleged selfish play, and he has had to downplay rumours of a feud with teammate Neymar.
