World Cup referee Mateu Lahoz returns to La Liga with a strong showing of 16 cards in the Barcelona derby after facing criticism in Qatar.
Mateu Lahoz, a World Cup referee, faced criticism after losing control of a heated quarter-final match, issuing 15 yellow cards. Even player Lionel Messi, who received a booking, commented on the performance, saying that FIFA should be responsible for ensuring that the referee is capable of handling such a significant match.
As a result of the game, which Argentina won on penalties, Lahoz was sent home. However, he returned to La Liga and caused surprise by showing 16 yellow cards during Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Espanyol.
In the fiery match between Barcelona and Espanyol, veteran Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba and Espanyol star Vinicius Souza were both given red cards. Video assistant referee (VAR) intervened to overturn a red card shown to Leandro Cabrera, and it also appeared that Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez was dismissed late in the game.
