Sergio Busquets retirement

Sergio Busquets considering international football retirement

According to journalist Toni Juanmarti, Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets is considering whether or not to carry on playing for Spain.

The doubt comes after ‘La Roja’ were humiliated by Morocco in the Round of 16 match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, in which Busquets was one of three Spanish players who missed penalties in a 0-3 shootout loss.

Busquets’ initial plan was to play for Spain till the next UEFA Nations League, but his elimination at the hands of Morocco was a major emotional blow.

Busquets has accepted his part of the blame, and even Luis Enrique has resigned as manager of the national team. With a new manager, Luis de la Fuente, in control of the squad and a new era ready to begin, the 34-year-old is reconsidering his choices about his future.

Busquets understood before the World Cup in Qatar that this would be his final World Cup, which is why the result has affected him so hard.

Now, the veteran has always stated that he intends to continue playing until his presence is no longer required.

He feels the same way about the national team, and now that he knows he won’t be able to participate in the 2026 World Cup or even the UEFA Euro, the Nations League was intended to be his next aim.

For the time being, the footballer is enjoying time with loved ones and will not return to club duty until December 16. During this period, he will isolate himself from the bustle and consider his next move.

Busquets had a wonderful relationship with Enrique, however he understands that the next Spain coach will have to construct a new project with new players.

So, for the time being, all anyone can do is wait to see what the midfield legend chooses on his future with club and nation.
